Chiaksan is the guardian mountain of Wonju-si in Gangwon-do. It borders on Socho-myeon in Wonju-si and Gangnim-myeon in Hoengseong-gun northwardly, and borders on Panbu-myeon and Sillim-myeon in Wonju-si and Suju-myeon in Yeongwol-gun southwardly. Its height is 1,288 meters, and it is a mountain of the Great Baekdu Mountain Range and is a range of Charyeong Mountains. Centered on its main peak, Birobong, Maehwasan and Sambong are located northwardly and many peaks such as Hyangrobong, Namdaebong, etc. are linked southwardly. A long ridge stretches southwardly. As the slope of east is gentle but that of west is steep, it is harmonized with roughness and beauty.
It was designated as a provincial park by Gangwon-do authorities in conformity with Natural Park Law in 1973, and was again designated as a national park as its value was highly evaluated. The mountain is filled with beautiful valleys, Ipseokdae, Sejondae, Sinseondae, Guryong Fall, Seryeom Fall, Yeongwon Fall, fantastic rocks and stones and other beautiful prospects everywhere. Furthermore, famous and old temples, such as Guryongsa, Sangwonsa, Seokgyeongsa, Gukhyangsa, Bomunsa, Ipseoksa, etc., are located in the mountain.
The main sanctuary of Guryongsa (Tangible Cultural Properties No.24 in Gangwon-do), Yeongwonsanseong, the site of Haemisanseong, Geumdusanseong and Seonghwangnim (Natural Monument No.93) at Seongnam-ri in Sillim-myeon were designated as cultural properties. As various mountain passes are being everywhere, many climbers and sightseers have visited this mountain every year.
